The United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, Rosemary Dicarlo, is calling on women in leadership positions to take advantage of the ability to influence decisions, to support grassroots women civil Society.

She said it has become necessary in the face of  "...global backlash against women's rights, shrinking civil space and targeted attacks on women's leaders and human rights defenders."
The comment was part of her remarks at the virtual event to mark the 20th anniversary of the United Nations Security Council resolution 1325 (2000) on women, peace and security.
At the event tagged: "Beyond the pandemic: Opening the Doors to Women's Meaningful Participation,'' the UN Political and peacebuilding affairs chief explained that women make up less than 19 per cent of national parliamentarians in conflict-affected regions.
The UN Peacebuilding Fund has also allocated 40% of its investments (from $2.7million in 2016 to 20.4million in 2019) to support gender-responsive initiatives.
