Of UN 76th General Assembly President-Elect, Abdulla Shahid

Maldives Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abdulla Shahid, has emerged as the President-elect of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). He won 143 of 191 votes cast to preside over the 76th session of the UN body, starting in September this year.

In an announcement after the election, the General Assembly incumbent, President Volkan Bozkir, extolled the virtues of the President-elect in multilateral diplomacy-

"Serving his country twice as Foreign Affairs Minister, and his contributions to the solutions to alleviate the plight of small island coummunities is commendable... He has been a strong voice in calling attention to the impact of COVID-19 and climate change on small island development states. I have no doubt that he will leave the General Assembly in a dedicated, transparent and inclusive manner." He said.

The United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, commended Shahid, adding that by-.

"coming from a small island developing state, he will bring unique insight to the 76th session of the General Assembly as the UN prepares for COP 26 in Glasgow in November".

HOPE is the central theme in the President-elect's vision for UNGA 76.
