Guterres calls for diverse voices to the decision-making table

Antonio Guterres calls for more voices to the decision-making table (civil society, the private sector and youth) while taking the oath of office for a second term as the UN Secretary-General on Friday, June 18, 2021, at the General Assembly Hall in New York.

Guterres acknowledged the enormous responsibilities bestowed on him "at this critical moment in history."

He was the sole candidate from the United Nation's 193 Member States to via for the job. His homeland, Portugal, nominated him and was appointed by the General Assembly acclamation after his endorsement by the United Nations Security Council for a second term.

In a related development, the Secretary-General reappointed Nigeria's Amina Mohammed as Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations. He asked Mohammed to serve for a second term shortly after taking his oath of office for a second term.

The second term would run from January 2022-December 2026.
